TitleBronze Age razor
DescriptionEarly Bronze Age tanged cooper-alloy razor, found in Fordoun, Aberdeenshire.
Tanged leaf-shaped razors date broadly to the Early Bonze Age, c1950-1500 BC. The Laurencekirk example can be classed with Jockenhoval's (1980) Variant II double-edged razors, which differ from Variant I only in possessing a midrib or decoration. Early Bronze age razors are broadly distributed across Britain and Ireland (Jockenhoval 1908, tafel 45) and they predominantly derive from burial contexts, though they occasionally occur as chance finds, such as Variant II razor found with a blade fragment from Kinnesswood, Perth and Kinross (Cowie & Hall 2009). Parallels for the Laurencekirk razor can be found from Barrows at Priddy, Somerset, and Laughton's Knowe, Orkney ( Jockenhoval 1980, nos 82, 83).
