TitleMedieval Unidentified Object
DescriptionMedieval amulet- sun/animal;
The surface condition is generally worn with some areas of wear, particularly around the edges.
One face features an engraved leopard or lion passant guardant inside a punched dotted border. The decoration looks similar to that of seal matrices carved in intaglio relief. The opposite face is decorated with a 9-armed starburst motif formed of triangular spikes emanating from a central sunken circular carving, around which are ten punched dots. The sunburst is carved inside a slightly sunken circular panel, which is itself bordered with punched dots. The surface of the tab on this face shows some damage in the form of linear scratch marks. Though it is not currently known what the item is, stylistically and decoratively it resembles artefacts of Medieval age, and so a date between c. AD 1200 and 1500 is offered.
