TitleMedieval coin hoard
DescriptionA small, scattered hoard found in a 5m x 5m area consisting of nine pennies of Edward I, II and III. A date of deposition can be estimated at c.1351-2 based on the latest coin. There is no evidence of a container or associated archaeological features.
This small hoard is typical for one deposited in the early 1350s in that it is dominated by coins from the reigns of Edward I and II. English coins were widespread in Scotland from the thirteenth to the later fourteenth century and outnumber the native Scottish issues during this period. The only mints present in the hoard are Canterbury and London, which were the two largest mints in England (before Canterbury was closed in the 1340s) so it is not unsurprising to see only these mints present in the hoard. The distribution of classes suggests that this hoard represents good currency removed from circulation and deposited on a single occasion. A date of deposition of c.1351-2 has been estimated based on the latest coin, though a date of the later 1350s is possible.
