Annular brooch, Stonehaven

TitleAnnular brooch, Stonehaven
Description"A silver annular brooch, complete with pin. The ring is rectangular in section and decorated on both faces. The tapering triangular pin is attached at a recessed pin bar and has a simple collar at the top. The pin has a small bulge in the shaft to take a gathering of fabric. The pin has no visible decoration.
One face of the frame, which the orientation of the bulge in the pin would suggest was visible when worn, is decorated with incised lines forming two rows of small squares.
The other face contains an inscription in Lombardic lettering, now worn but reflecting a variant of the common religious message ‘IESUS NAZARENUS REX IUDEORUM’ (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews) common on Medieval jewellery and likely serving an apotropaic function. The inscription reads:+ I H E S V S N A (Z?)
Annular brooches such as this are known from across England (compare examples recorded on the PAS database (e.g. NMS-99877A, LEIC-7CEC9E, NCL-A25F3D) and date to the 13th and 14th Centuries.
The brooch was discovered in the broader hinterland of Cowie Castle, which lies less than a kilometre to the northeast, and may relate to activity at that site, which is suggested to have been a Royal hunting lodge (Canmore ID 36900),"
