TitleMedieval seal matrix
Description"A complete, copper alloy seal matrix c. 1200-1400 CE.
The die face is of flat, vesica form and bears the following legend in Lombardic script: + SIGILL ROBERTI DE hAIA (Seal of Robert of Haia(?)). This is separated by a simple line border from the engraved central motif – a standing female figure, clothed in a dress or tunic, head turned in profile and holding an object, possibly a rod, in one hand with the other arm bent at the elbow and raised up. She is depicted wearing a head covering. The reverse of the seal matrix is plain, with a raised rib running the length of the object and terminating in a projecting neck and suspension loop. The find-spot of the seal matrix lies between Kintore and Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, and ‘hAIA’ is likely an abbreviated toponym (Harlaw might be a local option) though further research is needed here."
