DescriptionBronze Sea Gallantry Medal with ribbon in blue presentation box. The medal was awarded to W R Smailes personally by King George at Buckingham Palace on 25 February 1932. Inscribed on edge "WILLIAM RAYMOND SMAILES. "NAIRN," 3rd DECEMBER, 1931." - given in relation to his actions in saving the crew of the Nairn. Red ribbon with white lines at edges. Medal front has profile of King George looking left and "For Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea, G.R.I.", reverse is image of 5 people wrecked in the sea, one holding a prone casualty, another holding a baby, and a third sitting on debris waving a flag for help.
