Designed for bound feet, or 'gong xie,' a practice common in Han families until the 1920s, although banned by decree in 1902 by the Dowager Empress Tz'u-hia. Bound feet were known as 'golden lotus' or 'silver lotus' depending on size, and were intended to convey beauty and social status. Qing Dynasty (1636-1911).
