DescriptionFramed oil painting by John Macdonald Aiken. This work takes its title from a ballet written in 1881–1882 by the French composer Edouard Lalo (1823–1892).
The storyline of the ballet, set on Corfu, tells of a slave girl passed between two wealthy playboys on the turn of a bet. The Moroccan melodies on which the ballet is based are reflected in the Arab-style clothing of the figure in the painting. Painted in 1910.
