DescriptionCommemorative cloth illustrating Rudyard Kipling's poem 'The Absent-Minded Beggar,' commissioned by the Daily Mail's proprietor Alfred Harmsworth to aid a fund-raising effort to benefit reservists and their dependents during the South African War, otherwise known as the Boer War. Set to music by Sir Arthur Sullivan, the song was an instant success. The first public performance was sung by John Coates, under Sullivan's baton, at the Alhambra Music Hall on 13 November 1899.
