Descriptionblack laquered papier mache snuff box in the form of a square-toed shoe with brass nails in the heel. It was a favourite occupation among apprentices of all kinds during the 18th century to make snuff boxes in shapes connected with their own trades. The shoe shape was extremely popular throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries. As a rule, the top of the shoe was fashioned into a lid, and very often the sole and heel were studded with minute brass nails.
