Titlemedieval signet ring
DescriptionA medieval bronze signet ring with an oval bezel engraved with a device as yet undeciphered but either a monogram or merchant's mark. Such rings were popular at a time when illiteracy was widespread and those not entitled to bear arms were permitted to seal documents with such rings bearing either a monogram or mark depicting their name or trade, often in the form of a rebus. Bronze signet rings such as this would have been used for everyday transactions and worn on the thumb or first finger. Found at Banff.
