DescriptionRotary quern made from vesicular basalt. Lower stone has edge bound with iron band to contain upper stone; upper surface of this stone has grooves scored from the centre outwards; hollow in centre formerly held metal spike which went through centre of upper stone. Upper stone has hole through centre with iron bar to take spike from lower stone; iron spike at side to take wooden handle for turning upper stone. Found in 1879-80 when excavating Boddam harbour.
