DescriptionOctant by John Gilbert of Tower Hill, London. Mahogany frame index arm missing. The ivory scale or vernier is graduated. In the center of the octant on an ivory plaque is inscribed in script 'Made by Jho Gilbert on Tower Hill London. For Capt. Alex Milne Mar 12: 1763.' The top horizon mirror (missing) is on an adjustable turntable and can be rotated by by loosening a screw which locks the mirror's position. The lower mirror and peep sight (the latter is missing) are used for taking back sights, and were only fitted to very early octants. Dated 12th March, 1763.
