DescriptionOctant by William Sloman Gregory of London. Mahogany frame, index arm missing. The ivory scale or vernier is graduated. In the center of the octant on an ivory plaque is inscribed in script 'William Sloman Gregory London.' The top horizon mirror (missing) is on an adjustable turntable and can be rotated by by loosening a screw which locks the mirror's position. The lower mirror and peep sight are used for taking back sights, and were only fitted to very early octants. Mid to late 18th century
