DescriptionInuit harpoon with a metal blade inserted into a bone foreshaft held together by sealskin thongs. The forshaft is of bone or ivory with a bone handlewhich is fitted into the base of the foreshaft. A strip of simew runs from the foreshaft through a hole at the bottom of the shaft, and then threads back to the top of the shaft. Believed to have been found by its donor Captain W. Hutchison of the whaler 'UNION' buried deep in the flesh of a dead whale they had harpooned off the coast of Greenland. 19th century.
