DescriptionFrench light cavalry sabre, manufactured 1822 to 1881. Curved Klingenthal blade, one wide fuller and one thin fuller, the latter running next to the blade spine. Brass hilt with two large outer counter-guards and one smaller inner counter-guard. Brass pommel, grip brown leather bound with brass wire. Scabbard of steel, with steel chape and two loose-ring ferrules. Maker's marks on the right ricasso. The Klingenthal inscription on the back blade has been overlaid with heavy incised markings, and crude markings have also been incised on the left side of the blade below the ricasso. The ricasso also carries an indistinct mark. These are possibly North African arsenal marks.
