After the war the Earl of Fife returned to Britain while Don Jose went to South America where he played a heroic part in the struggle for independence from Spain and Portugal. In peacetime he visited Britain at the invitation of the Earl of Fife and stayed with him at Duff House. So great was the appeal of this remarkable soldier that he was given the Freedom of the Burgh of Banff. This sword was made to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of his death in 1850.
