DescriptionScottish billon Hardhead (equivalent of 2d Scots) of James VI, type II, dated November 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada. Obverse has the crowned letters IR, for Jacobus Rex; Reverse carries the lion rampant, with an inscription VINCIT VERITAS, OR 'Truth conquers.' with 2 pellets to the right of the lion indicating its value of twopence Scots.
These billons contain less than 5% silver, and were useful for small transactions.
Found during excavations at Craigievar Castle.
