DescriptionTop half of a Scottish heart or 'luckenbooth' brooch. These brooches are typified by the crown which surmounts the heart and are often called 'luckenbooth' brooches, being commonly sold from Edinburgh's Old Town luckenbooths in the 18th century as love tokens and as a protection against witchcraft. They originate in the medieval period in France where they were popular fashion accessories in the 14th century, however Scottish examples do not seem to appear until around 1700.
