Descriptionhandwritten copy of instructions given by James II of Scotland (the Old Pretender) from his court at St. Germains, February 29th, 1708, after which the recipient was to 'repair with what convenient speed you can to Our ancient Kingdom of Scotland and then to address yourself to such of our friends as we have named to you, but cannot safely name them here for fear of accidents.' The original was discovered with various other papers in a secret drawer in a cabinet in Slains Castle during repairs in 1837, and copied by Adam Arbuthnot.
