Descriptionsandalwood Australian Aboriginal parrying shield (believed unfinished) incised with 3 horizontal and 1 vertical row of incisions on the front and rows of incisions above and below the grip at the rear. A hollowed-out area above the grip also has rows of vertical incisions below it towards the grip. Inscribed on the back 'Sandalwood shield unfinished' and 'Penong, Wickens. Space for shavings for fire lighting.' Penong is in South Australia, on the Nullarbor Plain. Late 19th-early 20th century.
