DescriptionThis bronze medal depicts the return of Napoleon from Elba, represented by an eagle flying with a thunderbolt in its talons. The inscription in the exergue reads 'XXVI February MDCCCXV.' (26 February 1815). On the reverse side Mercury is shown flying with a scroll labelled 'To Arms' with the legend 'Declaration of the Congress of Vienna' and the date 'XIII March' (13th March) in the exergue.
This medal is the thirty-second in James Mudie's series of forty 'National Medals' struck in 1820 to commemorate British victories in George III's reign. They commemorate the events of the Napoleonic period, from a British perspective.
