DescriptionDance shield from the Kikuyu people of central Kenya. Made of hide with a wooden grip at rear tied with leather strips and decorated with an abstract design in red, black and white. Accompanied by 2 short spears with weighted shafts. Gifted by the Kikuyu as a mark of esteem to Joseph Githongo, an accountant in Kenya who clients included Jomo Kenyatta. His son John is a former Kenyan journalist who investigated bribery and fraud in his home country and later, under the presidency of Mwai Kibaki, took on an official governmental position to fight corruption.
