DescriptionCommemorative Jug; white, with floral decoration around rim, handle, base and sides; both sides have tranfer images of the Marquis of Lorne and Princess Louise on the occasion of their wedding in 1871.
The Marquis of Lorne (1845-1914), later 9th Duke of Argyll, married HRH Princess Louise (1848-1939), fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, on 21st March, 1871. The marriage was unusual in Britain, where a sovereign's daughter would normally marry royalty. At their wedding in 1871 the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders provided a Guard of Honour. In 1872 Louise was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the 91st which became known as Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders. The Marquis of Lorne became 9th Duke of Argyll in 1900 but he and Louise had no children and so the title passed to a nephew, Niall, on his death in 1914. After his death, Louise became more reclusive but accepted the appointment of Colonel-in-Chief of the Sutherland Highlanders in 1919 and appeared at charitable events. She died at the age of 91 in 1939, the longest living of all Queen Victoria's children.
