DescriptionSilver coin, Charles I sixty shillings Scots or '3 pund', 3rd coinage. Armoured King on horseback left, with flowing sash and upright sword, pebbly ground below with plain exergue. Lettering: 'CAROLVS. D:G. MAGN. BRITANN. FRANC. ET. HIBERN. REX'. Reverse: Crowned quartered shield of arms. Lettering: 'QVÆ. DEVS. CONIVNXIT. NEMO. SEPARET.' Struck in the mill and screw press, designed by Nicholas Briot. Dates 1637-1642.
Nicholas Briot was appointed Master of the Scottish Mint on the 7th August 1635, chosen for office by his Kings Majestie. The Lords of Secret Council had sanctioned the use of Briot's mill and screw press for the minting of coinage from the 12th January 1637, at first for silver coins only.
