DescriptionGold coin, Charles I half-unite or double crown', 3rd coinage. Obverse: crowned and draped bust left to bottom of coin, English styled crown on head with central cross pattee, B below for Briot. Lettering: ' CAR. D: G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. ET. HIB. REX'. Reverse: Crowned quartered shield of arms, crowned C with lozenge below to left, crowned R with lozenge below to right. Lettering: '· VNITA. TVEMVR'. Struck in the mill and screw press, designed by Nicholas Briot. Dates 1637-1642.
Nicholas Briot was appointed Master of the Scottish Mint on the 7th August 1635, chosen for office by his Kings Majestie. The Lords of Secret Council had sanctioned the use of Briot's mill and screw press for the minting of coinage from the 12th January 1637, at first for silver coins only.
