Titleseal matrix
DescriptionA copper alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The matrix has a central device which is a merchant#s mark, a symbol unique to one individual that was used to distinguish shipments and on legal documents. The legend is in Lombardic script, suggesting a date before 1500. Most matrices with such marks tend to be of 15th century date, but nevertheless the style of lettering has been shallowly engraved and has lost much legibility. Nevertheless, matrices that have merchants' marks remain unusual and this is one of a very small group found in Scotland.
