Titlefinger ring
Creator John Keith (goldsmith)
DescriptionA large, plain gold finger ring with a hallmark 'IK' set within a rectangular cartouche and the initials 'IEM' engraved within the interior. The hallmark is that of John Keith, a goldsmith active in Banff from 1794-1824. This date and the plain exterior cleary indicates a wedding ring (an assumption that perhaps should not be made for earlier examples) and the initials are probably those of the wearer.
18th century betrothal rings are rare, possibly because convention then dictated that they were buried with the wearer. The ring is an example of Scottish provincial work, Keith being an active maker of flatware and associated silverware in Banff.
