Object numberI258
Titlespring gun
Descriptionanti-poaching spring gun, with a large bell-mouthed barrel almost entirely enclosed in a large wooden stock bound round with iron bands, with a flintlock firing mechanism. Set into the ground or into a wooden post using a spike, the gun would be fired by means of wires running to rings on the trigger bar (missing). Poachers would unwittingly trip the wires, swing the gun around in their direction and fire the weapon. Circa 1770-1827
