Inuit harpoon, 1890
Object numberP976
TitleInuit harpoon, 1890
DescriptionInuit harpoon with a metal blade inserted into a bone foreshaft held together by a metal peg going through both. The main shaft is of wood with a thin bone insert at the top. Both the foreshaft and main shaft are bound together by a sealskin line threaded through 2 small holes on the foreshaft and 1 on the main shaft, ending a peg just below the hole. There are 2 pegs mid-way along the main shaft, so when the harpoon has struck its target (usually a seal) it embeds just as far as the pegs. The harpoon is also fitted with attachments for an air float which prevented the prey from diving, and also stopped the dead seal from sinking until it was recovered. 19th century
