Titletortoiseshell trinket box
Descriptiontortoiseshell trinket box, oval, radiating carved design on both lid and base. Lid has a central representation of a basket of fruit, base has an oval central image (a pineapple?). gilt clasp and hinge. Inside the lid recess is a tortoiseshell plate, which, when removed, reveals a painting of a sleeping nude woman reclining on a blue and a white draped robe beside a stream, attended by Cupid holding an arrow. To the right is a male figure, and the picture may be an illustration of the nymph Daphne being struck by Cupid's leaden arrow, which turns her against the god Apollo, who, through Cupid's malice, has been struck by Cupid's golden arrow and now loves Daphne.
