Italian cabasset helmet
Object numberB2700
TitleItalian cabasset helmet
DescriptionCabasset, Italian in origin, the roped brim is narrowed and has scrolls with foliage. There is a row of rosette-headed brass rivets around the base for holding the lining strap, with a rivetted repair on the right-hand rim. The helmet is forged entirely from the one piece. The skull is high, terminating in a small stalk and resembles the form of a calabash, from which the word 'cabasset' derives. At the back of the helmet is a brass shield-shaped plume holder. The decoration on the skull is in 6 panels, originally gilt on a blued background. The most noticable engravings are that of a cuirass and tasset at the top, a gauntlet, a falchion, 'tilting jambe' and genouillere, a close helmet and peascod cuirass, and at the bottom a medley of Classical and European armour.
