Object number1984.710.11
TitleScottish peat spade
DescriptionThe spade consists of an iron head and a long wooden shaft. The head comprises a flat blade, with a wing on one side, so that the sods can be cut on two sides and detached with a single twist of the tool. The head has a socket for the shaft. In most spades this is an 'open' socket formed by bending back the upper part of the blade to form two triangular collars which wrap around the bottom of the shaft. 19th century
