DescriptionChinese close-backed filigree brooch of violet-blue kingfisher feathers in the form of a stylised insect. Maker's stamp on back. It was only in China that the feathers were used as an inlay material for fine objects. The technique, called tian-tsui, means "dotting with kingfishers" and often involves using glue to adhere the feathers onto vermeil, or gilded silver. Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)
